A survival crafting game set in Fourth Age of Middle-earth is on the way.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, which was announced during the Epic Games Store Summer Showcase event, allows up to eight players to explore the ancient kingdom of Khazad-dûm. It’s a brand-new game advertised as “the only survival crafting game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth,” and it’ll be released in spring 2023.

This new game by independent developer Free Range Games and publisher North Beach Games is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and was debuted during the Epic Games Summer Showcase. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be available on PC only through the Epic Games Store at launch.

“The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria,” according to the official announcement, “takes players beyond the books and into the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, the mythical universe imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien.” Lord Gimli Lockbearer summons players to the Misty Mountains, where they command a company of Dwarves entrusted with recovering lost spoils from the Dwarven realm of Moria—known as Khazad-dûm or Dwarrowdelf—in the depths beneath their feet.

Their journey will test their resolve as they delve deep into the Mines of Moria in search of its treasures. To survive, craft, develop, and explore the legendary, enormous mines, players will band together. The brave expeditioners will have to be wary of the unknown hazards that await them.”

Because the game is procedurally generated, every adventure players embark on, whether alone or with friends, will be unique and unknown. Players will need to mine while keeping track of hunger, sleep, temperature, resources, and more throughout each session.

Return to Moria will feature a lot of base building, and players will be able to recover Dwarven landmarks as the game proceeds. This is in addition to discovering magical objects such as “swords that glow when Orcs are nearby, maps of long-dormant Mithril veins, books containing lost crafting plans, and amulets that grant strength or wisdom.”

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is set in the Fourth Age, two centuries after the events of the films and novels and two centuries before Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series.

It is currently unknown whether or not the game will be ported to console systems, and if it will, when it will be so. Having said that, if any information on this is released, or if any further significant details regarding the game are provided, we will update the story to reflect those additions.
