According to a statement released by the ITIA on Friday, Halep gave a sample that had Roxadustat in it. The World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list of banned substances for 2022 includes the substance.

Halep released a statement about the suspension on Friday.

“Today starts the hardest match of my life: a fight for truth,” she wrote. “I was told that I tested positive for a very small amount of a substance called Roxadustat.”

Roxadustat is a drug approved by doctors in the European Union to treat anemia caused by kidney failure. According to the EU’s medicines agency, it makes the body make more of the natural hormone erythropoietin, or EPO, which can increase the number of red blood cells and give the body more energy.

She called the news “the biggest shock of [her] life” and said that because of her values, she had never considered cheating.
