Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy will no longer be together.
The 47-year-old former host of Chelsea said Monday on Instagram that she and Koy have broken up.
Handler posted a video that she and her boyfriend had planned to share on their one-year anniversary. In the caption, she wrote, “It breaks my heart to say that we’ve decided it’s best for us to take a break from our relationship right now.”
People hears from a source that people who know the couple hope this is just a temporary situation.
“Their friends still hope that they can get along. But if anything, it’s clear that being together has made both of them better people “source tells us.
In a moving post on Instagram, Handler told her fans, “I know that many of you cared about our relationship, and I wanted to tell you how much that meant to us both. How important it still is. And how much I now believe that love is there for all of us.”
She praised Koy and said, “He blew my heart open with love, and my life will never be the same because of him.”
Added Handler: “One of the best things in my life is that @jokoy loves and adores me. He restored my faith in men, love, and being completely myself, and I’ve never been more hopeful about the future “future.”
In an open letter to Koy, Handler said, “You blew my creativity open, my desire to work hard and be on the road again, and you reminded me who I was and have always been, and my feet have never been more firmly planted on the ground.”
“This isn’t a conclusion. It’s a new start, and it makes me feel better to know that I’m still loved and that I love this man as much as the sun loves the moon and the moon loves the sun. YOUR PERSON IS COMING,” Handler wrote, adding, “So, please keep rooting for both of us, because you never know what life will bring, and let’s start by all going to the theater on August 5th to buy tickets to Jo’s new movie EASTER SUNDAY and Filipino PRIDE! Let’s go!”
A friend of both Handler and Koy, who is now 51, put them together almost 20 years ago. Then, Koy went on to be a regular guest on Chelsea Lately, Handler’s old E! show that ran from 2007 to 2014. Handler was recently a guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which got fans excited about the idea of her coming back to late-night TV.
Handler and Koy were first thought to be dating when they were seen sitting close to each other at a Los Angeles Dodgers game in September. She then wrote a post about being in love, but she didn’t say who Koy was.
“Just sitting here in Mallorca thinking about how grateful I am to have so many people I love in my life, to live the life I do, and to be going on tour doing what I love,” she wrote in the caption of an Instagram photo of herself looking happy.
The comic kept going, “And that I’ve finally found the best kind of guy to fall in love with. Everyone has a chance! That sort of thing.”
A few days later, Handler made the couple’s relationship official on Instagram by posting two photos, one of which showed them kissing.
“”He’s on tour, I’m on tour, and sometimes we tour together,” she wrote in the post’s caption, adding, “#VaccinatedAndHorny #FunnyIsFunny. All of these will be in a city near you!”
In October, Koy, who is also a comedian, joined Handler on her Dear Chelsea podcast to talk about their relationship in an honest way. Even though they agreed from the start that their chemistry was “amazing,” Handler didn’t think of Koy as a romantic partner at first because he had “brother energy.”
“You’re a lot like my brother in a lot of ways,” she said to Koy, referring to her older brother Chet, who had died in 1984. “So, in many ways, I feel like I’m just so safe. And I feel like, “Oh, this is family!” because I’ve always thought of you as family. Just that I didn’t want to f—- you before.”
In October, Handler told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that she “fell in love at the age of 46.” Because of this, she now says, “There is hope for everyone in this world.”
“One day I just looked at Jo and thought, ‘Oh, that’s my guy,'” she said. “So he’s like my best friend, and I get to have sex with him, too. … Fun time!”
