In documents acquired by TODAY, the actor and television personality, 62, filed suit with the Los Angeles Superior Court of California on May 12 citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their breakup.
On January 1, 2011, Bertinelli married Vitale, a financial planner. The host of “Valerie’s Home Cooking” filed for legal separation from her husband in November 2021.
Vitale and Bertinelli have been separated since December 2019, according to recent divorce papers.
According to the paperwork, the couple has a prenuptial agreement that is “in full force and effect and totally enforceable on the parties.”
Bertinelli and Vitale don’t had any children together.

After filing for divorce, Tom Vitale, Valerie Bertinelli’s ex-husband, asks for spousal support
Valerie Bertinelli and her husband Tom Vitale, who she is no longer with, are moving forward with their divorce.
Last month, the Golden Globe winner, who is 62, filed for divorce from his wife, Vitale, who is 58. They had been married for more than 10 years. On Thursday, he asked the Los Angeles Superior Court for spousal support.
Vitale also questions the validity of their prenuptial agreement and tries to stop Bertinelli from asking for spousal support in the papers.
Bertinelli filed for a legal separation from the financial planner in November, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In May, she changed her petition to ask for a divorce.
How Valerie and Tom met each other?
Valerie was previously married to rock singer Eddie Van Halen, with whom she tied the knot in 1981, as fans familiar with her time in the spotlight will recall. Wolfgang, the former couple’s son, was born on March 16, 1991. After 20 years together, the couple divorced in 2001. Their divorce was finalised six years later in 2007. Eddie passed away on October 6, 2020, following a fight with cancer.
Valerie and Tom first met in 2004 when Valerie’s brother, Patrick Bertinelli, introduced them. The two instantly became attracted to each other and dated for the next six years.
By 2010, Tom had decided it was time to propose to Valerie, which she revealed in an AARP interview at the time.
She told the firm for their July/August 2010 cover story, “We’d spoken about getting married, but I was still stunned.” “Because he was so terrified, it was lovely that he asked me. ‘Are you kidding me?’ I exclaimed.”
“Val and I had been through a difficult time and wanted to go on, but we didn’t want to trust anyone,” Tom explained to AARP. “We had just thoroughly understood each other. My family is the same as hers. It wasn’t love at first sight that drew them together; it was family.”
