Google’s Cheaper Chromecast Appears On FCC: May Become A Reality

Protocol reported in January that Google was working on a less expensive Chromecast video streaming dongle with a 1080p resolution that may be marketed as the “Chromecast HD with Google TV.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website has now included a new Google wireless device. It’s thought to be a low-cost Chromecast HD streaming device with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The FCC filing could signal that the item with the model number G454V will be released soon.

The FCC application does not, however, confirm the existence of a Chromecast. For the time being, it’s simply known as the “Google G454V.” There are no tasty leaked images; the files just refer to the item as a “wireless device” having dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth LE.

The new Google device has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, according to the FCC listing. Although there are few information about the new Google hardware, there are a few characteristics that stand out. The new Chromecast HD is expected to offer a 1080p resolution. It also has video streaming capabilities as well as multiple operating modes. A USB cable will be included as a charging accessory with the device. Multiple WLAN functionalities are enabled, with bandwidth speeds up to 3Mbps.

The Chromecast HD with Google TV is indicated by the old naming convention for Google devices. This is further supported by the device’s 1080p resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. The device was made in Thailand and is believed to be less expensive than the Chromecast with Google TV in 4K quality. The release date and price of the expected Chromecast HD with Google TV have yet to be announced by Google.

Not every item that passes the FCC is released, but most manufacturers wait until they’re nearing completion before submitting them. I’m willing to bet the price of a low-cost Chromecast that we’ll see it this fall. However, I’m curious as to how low Google will go: the current Chromecast with Google TV already supports 4K HDR for $50 (now on sale for $40).
