Paul Reubens, an American comedian, actor, and television personality, is also known for his persona or alter ego, “Pee-Wee Herman.”
Paul Reubens was born Paul Rubenfeld on August 27, 1952 in Peekskill, New York. He was reared with his two younger siblings, Luke and Abby, in Sarasota, Florida, where his parents, Judy and Milton Rubenfeld, ran a lamp store. In addition to serving as a pilot in World War II with the Israeli Air Force and the British Royal Air Force, Milton, his father, had previously worked as an automotive salesman. Reubens attended many circus performances as a child because the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ winter headquarters were in Sarasota, Florida. His passion in entertainment was piqued by his early exposure to the circus, which also influenced his own entertaining approach.

During an improvisational performance with The Groundlings in 1978, the persona “Pee-Wee Herman” was conceived. He is modeled after the concept of a man who aspires to be a comedian but is so hopelessly inept at telling jokes that it is clear to everyone that he will never succeed. In 1970, when Reubens played an incredibly annoying character in a production of “Life with Father,” he adopted Pee-distinctive Wee’s speech pattern. Herman is the name of a boy Reubens knew growing up, and Pee-Wee is a reference to the Pee Wee brand of harmonica.
Personal Issues
In 1991, when he was detained in Florida and charged with indecent exposure, his career suffered a tremendous blow. His spotless reputation was tarnished by the controversy, and CBS yanked Pee-Playhouse Wee’s repeats from its schedule.
Herman was also detained in 1971 for loitering and prowling in addition to his 1991 arrest (charges were dropped). He was given a two-year probationary sentence for marijuana possession in 1983. And in 2002, he was detained and accused of having material that inappropriately showed a youngster under the age of 18 engaging in sexual activity. He defended his innocence, claiming that the allegedly pornographic items found in his house were actually a collection of old erotica.
