First Kill is based on a short story by bestselling author Victoria “V.E.” Schwab, who also created and wrote the sapphic fantasy teen drama. Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook) is a legacy teenage vampire who is tasked with claiming her first victim to take her place within her powerful family of bloodsuckers. Calliope “Cal” Burns (Imani Lewis), the new girl Juliette had set her sights on, turns out to be a vampire hunter from a storied family of slayers. Naturally, “both discover that the other is not so easy to murder and, sadly, way too easy to fall for,” according to the streamer’s official description.

Schwab described the short story, which will appear in the 2020 collection Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite, as a “launching point for the rest of the world” in a recent interview with Manny the Movie Guy. The story effectively moved into new ground after the first episode, and the author praised showrunner Felicia D. Henderson with helping her flesh out the plot from what she’d previously sketched.
In the Season 1 finale, the series draws heavily on the Romeo and Juliet and Twilight similarities, even using Shakespeare’s “violent delights have violent endings” statement. To preserve Theo’s life, the Burns matriarch reluctantly handed him up to Juliette’s vampire brother Oliver, so he might join a “new family.” Oliver, on the other hand, is up to naught good, reminding his new “brother” that he came to Savannah to “ruin some lives” before introducing him to some more supernatural “friends” who would help them “rule this b*tch” in a possible second season. Slayer Jack, on the other hand, was last seen loading up some vampire-hunting weaponry and will most likely be hot on their tail.

“I love strong female characters, I love powerful calculated confident characters, and for [Cal] to come from a line of monster hunters, I was like, ‘I have to be part of it,'” Lewis said of her character in the post. “The show’s fan base has already gone nuts. It’s incredibly sweet, hilarious, and warm.”
