The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 - Confirmed!

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian American television series made by Bruce Miller and based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. The streaming site Hulu ordered the project as a 10-episode straight-to-series order, with filming beginning in late 2016. Following the Second American Civil War, a dystopia emerges in which a theonomic, authoritarian society confines fertile women, dubbed “Handmaids,” to child-bearing slavery.

The first look at season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale has been released by Hulu.

Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) is pictured staring down at the camera, probably in mourning attire, in the new pictures. Is she going to her late husband Fred Waterford’s funeral? Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale will recognize the second image: Elisabeth Moss’ June looking up at the camera, hopelessly.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5: Release Date

According to Hulu, Season 5 of the dystopian thriller The Handmaid’s Tale will release on the streaming platform on September 14th. The season will kick off with a two-episode premiere, followed by one episode every week after that.

At the end of season 4, June eventually exacted her vengeance on the Waterfords by brokering a deal with Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) that saw the release of 22 resistance women in exchange for Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) return to Gilead. Rather than returning Fred to Gilead, Lawrence and Nick (Max Minghella) let him slip through their clutches and into the ruthless grips of June and her fellow handmaids. When we last saw Fred, his headless body was hanging from the Wall, where rebellious handmaids had been hung in previous seasons.

Hulu also provides a synopsis of the next season. “June faces repercussions for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to reclaim her identity and purpose,” it continues. “As Gilead’s power grows across Canada, Serena, who is widowed, strives to improve her reputation in Toronto. Commander Lawrence joins with Aunt Lydia in his efforts to rebuild Gilead and rise to power. June, Luke, and Moira fight Gilead from afar as they continue their quest to save and reunite with Hannah.”

The new episodes are “wild,” according to Madeline Brewer, who plays Janine who was stranded in Gilead by the end of last season after becoming separated from June. “I don’t know what to say… “To be sure, we’ve gone a long way from Gilead,” she stated. “And everyone is learning something new.” “Everyone is going through a transition.”
